Internship: Development of dielectric resonator metasurface lenses

tno_1

What will you be doing?

In a lot of applications you can find optical research of TNO, for example: in monitoring the size of the hole in the ozone layer, optimizing oil production, mobile phone chips and in non-invasive glucose measurements for diabetics. The Optics Research Group (70FTE) is one of the leading Optics groups within Europe for design and development of high-performance optical solutions.
TNO Optics works closely together with other research groups within the Nanotechnology Cluster in Delft (200FTE), in particular, with Opto-Mechatronics, Space Systems Engineering and Nano-Instrumentation for the development of new instruments for Space and Semiconductor Equipment applications. Combining our knowledge of optics with expertise available in these research groups enables us to offer complete measurement solutions to our customers. This is strengthened by extensive in-house laboratory facilities and specialized manufacturing capabilities.

What do we require of you?

We are now looking for an intern for:
Development of dielectric resonator metasurface lenses (Bachelor/Master >3-6 months):
Metasurfaces of plasmonic and or dielectric nano resonators have emerged in the last years as a new technological platform for the realization of unconventional optical components. Their design requires the use of accurate, still efficient design strategies and tools.

As an intern you will be assessing the software package S4 and the TU/e in-house developed code for comparison (in terms of computation time/accuracy) with currently adopted tools (Comsol/HFSS).
You will be working with selected tools for the design of metasurface lenses: THz generation (800 nm), High NA lens (193 nm) and a lens for Photonic IC – fiber coupling.
Depending on the available time, there is always the possibility for you to address additional topics. For instance you could be working on the development of a Matlab framework (using the selected tool) for the design of multisurface structures and / or work on local optimization of metasurfaces depending on phase sampling/radiation characteristics.

As an intern we require you to be a Bachelor or Master student in Physics or Electrical Engineering with a specific interest and / or expertise in Optics/Electromagnetics. If you recognize yourself in this profile and are enthusiastic about the assignment, feel free to apply for the position of intern at the Optics department.

What can you expect of your work situation?

TNO is an independent research organisation whose expertise and research make an important contribution to the competitiveness of companies and organisations, to the economy and to the quality of society as a whole. Innovation with purpose is what TNO stands for. With 3000 people we develop knowledge not for its own sake but for practical application. To create new products that make life more pleasant and valuable and help companies innovate. To find creative answers to the questions posed by society. We work for a variety of customers: governments, the SME sector, large companies, service providers and non-governmental organisations. Working together on new knowledge, better products and clear recommendations for policy and processes. In everything we do, impact is the key. Our product and process innovations and recommendations are only worth something if our customers can use them to boost their competitiveness.

What can TNO offer you?

You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.
